Govt. of India (GoI) is working for the Unique Identification project for whole of India. This project is to issue a unique identification number (UID) that can be verified and authenticated in an online, cost-effective manner, and that is robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities. The Mission of this project is Creating a unique identity for every resident in India like the way Social Security Number serves the purpose in U.S.

Initiated by Mr. Nandan Nilekani this project has been regularly making public aware about their progress. Now they have come up with a unique opportunity by inviting the developer community in India to participate in developing the client software application using Java, C++ or C# for all the standard client operating systems. The developer community includes individual developers or a software development company. You can find more information on this project in this official document.
