Scams like Phishing and Vishing are designed to steal your web identity and personal data and these activities are growing at a gradual rate and denting millions of dollars to consumers worldwide. Most of the cases it is not the Intelligence of the hacker or Phisher, but the ignorance or foolishness of the consumer that causes him pay. Phishing is carried out via fraudulent emails and Vishing is orchestrated via bogus voice messages and phone calls. I have also covered an email scam earlier as well ICICI Bank Fraud Emails that can give you an hint of how these scams trap gullible users.

Here is a list of things to keep in mind how to safeguard yourself while dealing with banking over the internet.

  • Do not give any confidential information such as password, customer id, Credit/Debit Card number or PIN,CVV,DOB to any e-mail request, even if the request is from government authorities like Income Tax department or any Card Association company like VISA or Master Card
  • Do not open unexpected e-mail attachments or instant message download links, they may contain data monitoring viruses.
  • Always check the web address carefully before sharing any sensitive information. Make sure its hdfcbank.com not hdfcbenk.com or hdfcbanc.com .
  • For logging in, always type the website address for e.g. (www.hdfcbank.com) on your web browser
  • The Padlock icon at the upper or bottom right corner of the webpage must be always ‘On’ during secure transactions
  • Ensure that you have installed the latest anti-virus/ anti-spyware/ personal firewall/ security patches on your computer or high end mobile phones on which you perform banking.
  • Use non-admin user ID for daily work on your computer

  • In case of doubt, do not click on any link provided in the e-mail and ignore the mail.
  • Report a suspicious e-mail or phone call right away to the bank.

In case you encounter such scam or in doubt about authenticity of the Email or Phone call:

  • Contact your Branch/ Phone Banking at a phone number you know to be accurate, appearing: on a Debit/ Credit card or bank/ Credit card statement; or published on the official website, and let the Bank know the details of the suspected incidents.
  • If you receive any e-mail, phone call requesting your NetBanking details like your PIN, password, Account number or Credit/ Debit Card details, please do not respond to it and forward the e-mail to fake.email@hdfcbank.com

Note: No Bank will ever ask you to divulge any confidential information over e-mail or phone call.
