At an event in San Francisco, Microsoft announced the availability of the awaited Internet Explorer 9 ‘s Release Candidate version. The launch took place on 10th of Feb 2011.

As quoted on the official Internet Explorer 9 website,

Web browsing is the No. 1 thing people do on their Windows-based PC, and as such, they increasingly expect the same experience they associate with their PC applications from their favorite Web-based e-mail service, photo site or social network site. This kind of immersive experience does not occur on the Web today, and using a browser is often associated with limited performance and interactivity. Microsoft developed Windows Internet Explorer 9 to help change this.

Since the first IE9 developer platform preview was introduced in March 2010, there have been various beta developments till the product reached the RC stage. The beta of IE9 was publically launched on September 15, 2010.

Internet Explorer’s director of product management, Ismail quoted,  “The release candidate is a major milestone that signals it’s time for developers to start taking advantage of IE9’s features. Our focus with IE9 has been on creating the platform for the next class of Web experiences built around HTML5 and tapping into the power of the whole PC.”

The IE9 RC introduces several features like:

  • Being able to close a tab without making it active
  • Improvements to Pinned Sites, which enables users to take their favorite sites and place them directly on the Windows 7 Taskbar like any other application.
  • Tracking Protection, which gives users better control over how their information is shared across sites.
  • Support for Web standards and HTML5
